Napping Blastoise Turtle Next to a Little Crab

Eyes closed and wearing a gentle smile, a sleepy turtle rests its head on its flippers under a big shell of patchwork hexagon shapes. One tiny bubble floats up from the top of the shell, and smaller bubbles trail beneath it. Right next to the turtle, a happy little crab with big round eyes waves its claws and smiles. Pebbles and small specks dot the sandy ground, and three seashells sit up front: a ridged scallop, a swirly spiral shell and a smaller clam shell. The spots on the flippers are a nice way to practice small details. Soft greens work for the shell and head, and bright orange or red helps the crab pop against the sand. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big turtle shell: color the shell plates forest green and leave the thin rim band golden yellow.
- 2Fill the turtle head and flippers with light green, then add the forest green spots on the body and flippers.
- 3Color the crab's body and back shell salmon orange and golden yellow, and its claws and legs tomato red.
- 4Add the three snail and scallop shells in peach orange, lavender purple, and pale pink, plus the gray pebbles at the bottom.
- 5Color the thought bubble sky blue and the crab's eyes, leaving the eye whites bright white and the small highlights on the bubble white.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading along the lower edges of the shell and the body to make the shapes pop.
