In the middle of the page sits a cheerful octopus with a big round head, wide sparkly eyes and an open-mouthed smile. Its eight tentacles curl out in playful spirals, each lined with small oval suckers that give kids plenty of detail to fill in. Eight bubbles of different sizes drift around the edges, a few at the top, some at the sides and a couple near the bottom. Nothing else is in the background, so the octopus really stands out. Smooth, bold outlines and roomy open areas, especially in the head, work well for preschoolers and early elementary kids with crayons or markers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the big round head and the main tentacles with lavender purple, leaving the eye whites and the small gap beside the left arm white.
- 2Color all the bubbles with sky blue, but leave the small shiny highlight on the large top-right bubble white.
- 3Add coral pink to the inside of the smile and light pink to the tiny tips of the lower tentacles and the mouth interior.
- 4Keep the eye whites white, then add the black pupils and outlines as you like so the eyes pop.
- 5Optional: Add a few slightly darker purple strokes on the tentacles and head edges to give them a little shading.
