Sitting on a checkered picnic blanket with a big open-mouth smile, this cartoon turtle has a small shell-shaped cylinder poking out of the top of its shell. In front of it are a woven basket with a handle and triangle sandwiches, two apples, and a wavy-patterned pitcher with a curved handle. The grassy park behind has two leafy trees, rounded bushes and little grass tufts, and two butterflies flutter on either side, one leaving a dotted flight path. Shell panels, spotted legs and belly stripes give kids lots of sections to fill, and the large shapes suit young children. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big grassy areas: color the grass around the turtle and the bushes in lime green and grass green, leaving the tree trunks for later.
- 2Fill the turtle's head, arms, legs and feet in lime green, keeping the little teeth and the eye shine white.
- 3Color the turtle's shell in dark brown and light brown, then add butter yellow on the shell plates and pale yellow on the belly plates.
- 4Fill the picnic blanket with blush pink and light coral checks, leaving the white squares clean, then color the basket in wheat orange and caramel brown.
- 5Finish with the sandwiches in cream, the apples in bright red, the blue pitcher in sky blue with an ivory stripe, and the sky in white.
- 6Optional: Add a few darker strokes of forest green in the bushes and a little extra brown on the shell for depth.
