Across the top of this pond scene glides a dragonfly with big round eyes, curled antennae and a wide smile. Its four large veined wings are spread out and its long segmented tail curves downward. Beneath it, a little duck floats on rippling water with its beak open, among lily pads and two water lily blooms. Cattails and tall grasses fill both edges, rocks and bushes sit along the shore, and a leafy tree, pine trees, faraway hills and puffy clouds make up the background. Wing cells and lily petals give kids lots of detail to work through. Soft turquoise and lilac on the dragonfly's wings would look pretty, with bright yellow for the duck and pink for the water lilies. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the pond water and the wide ripples with pond blue, leaving the duck and the lily flowers white for now.
- 2Color the meadow, bushes, trees and grass with lime green, and the lower grass patches with grass green.
- 3Paint the dragonfly body bright blue and its head pale yellow green, leaving the big eyes white with dark pupils.
- 4Color both dragonfly wings with pale sky blue, and fill the cattails brown and the rocks light gray.
- 5Add coral pink to the lily flowers and leave the duck white, with its wing lines and white shine untouched.
- 6Optional: Add a few darker strokes of forest green on the pine trees and bright blue on the pond edges for depth.
