Up on a stone balcony at the top of a fairy-tale castle, three smiling princesses wave, and one of them holds a heart-topped wand. Hearts are everywhere you look: on the tall scale-roofed towers, the balcony railing, the banners by the door and the big arched front gate. Flags fly from the tower tips. A large rainbow curves behind the castle, with puffy clouds and sparkly stars in the sky. A winding path of stars runs through the garden to the gate, and flower bushes, trees and faraway mountains sit on either side. Younger kids can begin with the big hearts and the rainbow, and older kids can take on the roof scales and stone bricks. Pink and purple hearts against soft gray stonework make a dreamy mix. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the castle towers, walls, and stone path with sand beige, leaving the window outlines and gate details for later.
- 2Color the rainbow arcs from the outside in: coral red, tangerine orange, lemon yellow, spring green, bright blue, and lavender purple, with the top flag in coral red.
- 3Color the trees, bushes, and grassy areas with spring green, emerald green, forest green, and lime green, mixing greens for a fuller look.
- 4Fill the castle door in chocolate brown and the heart above it in hot pink, then color the two hanging banners in rose pink.
- 5Color the clouds and side mountains with pale aqua and dusty blue, and keep the sky and the small star highlights white.
- 6Optional: Add a little caramel tan shading along the lower edges of the castle walls and roofs for a bit of depth.
