Rainbow Behind a Leaping Dolphin

A smiling dolphin arcs up out of the waves with its tail still close to the water and splashes flying around it. Behind it stretches a big striped rainbow that ends in a fluffy cloud on each side. Two seagulls glide across the upper corners of the sky, and a few wavy lines along the bottom show the sea. The dolphin has a big round eye, an open happy mouth, and clear flippers and fins that are easy to color. The rainbow's bands are wide enough for chunky crayons, so preschoolers and early elementary kids should do well with it. Keep the dolphin in soft blues and grays so the red, orange, yellow, green and purple stripes stand out. Free to print for a classroom ocean unit or a rainy day. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the whole dolphin, its flippers, and its fins with sky blue, leaving the eye white and the smile teeth uncolored.
- 2Color the rainbow arcs from the outside in: red on the outer band, golden yellow next, then yellow green, sage green, and purple on the inner bands.
- 3Use emerald green and bright green on the right side of the rainbow, and purple on its inner right band to match the example.
- 4Color the splashes around the dolphin in sky blue, and fill the bottom waves with light blue.
- 5Leave the clouds, both seagulls, and the empty background white so the colors pop.
- 6Optional: add a few light strokes of a darker shade along one side of the dolphin to give it a bit of depth.
