Farmyard Chicken Pair: Rooster and Hen by the Barn

Coloring guide
Standing next to a smaller hen is a big rooster with a tall comb, a full fan of curved tail feathers and a smiling open beak. She tilts her head toward him, and her wing feathers sit in neat scalloped rows. Behind them is a wooden barn with a big X-braced door and a square gable window, plus a wheelbarrow beside a rectangular hay bale. A wooden rail fence runs across the back with leafy trees and bushes behind it, and grass tufts, a few small stones and daisy-like flowers fill the foreground. The feathers offer lots of small sections, and the large shapes still work for younger kids. Rich reddish-brown fits the rooster's tail, warm golden tan the hen, with a bright red comb and yellow beaks and legs. Print it at home for a classroom project or weekend craft. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big background areas: color the grass patches and bushes in lime green, and the tree canopy and branches in leaf green, leaving the sky and tree highlights white.
- 2Fill the barn with barn red on its walls, roof and the door frame edges, then color the door panels and the cream beige door frame, leaving the frame lightly lit.
- 3Color the rooster's head, neck and hen's head with golden yellow, and the rooster's body and wing with burnt orange and chestnut brown for a warm, rich look.
- 4Paint the rooster's big tail feathers in emerald green with deep teal accents, then add rust orange and chestnut brown to the lower tail and wings.
- 5Color the hen's body and wings with amber gold, caramel tan and chestnut brown, and fill the hay bale and wheelbarrow with golden yellow and caramel tan.
- 6Optional: Finish with the rooster's red comb and wattle in barn red, and keep the rooster's eye whites bright white for a lively expression.
