Sleepy Raccoon and Owl in a Tree Hollow

Curled up inside a big oval hollow in a tree trunk, a sleepy raccoon rests its head on its front paws, eyes closed with a peaceful smile. Its long, fluffy ringed tail drapes over the edge and hangs down the bark. On a branch at the upper right, a small owl perches with its eyes shut too, so both seem to be dozing together. Leaves fill the corners and line the branches, and a few puffy bushes sit in the background on the right. Bold outlines and roomy spaces suit young colorers, and the bark leaves plenty of room for texture. Try soft grays and browns on the raccoon's fur, dark charcoal on the mask and tail rings, and warm autumn oranges and golds on the leaves. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big tree trunk and branch in caramel brown, and fill the inside of the hollow with espresso brown.
- 2Color the raccoon's head, body and tail bands in light gray, then fill the tail stripes and the paws with charcoal gray.
- 3Fill the leaves with bright green, and use forest green for the darker leaves at the top left and bottom left.
- 4Color the owl's face and belly in cream yellow, its wings and head top in caramel brown, and the wing edges in chestnut brown.
- 5Add the raccoon's coral pink inner ears, charcoal gray mask and cheek shadows, leaving the eye stripes and background white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading along the tree trunk edges and under the raccoon's tail for depth.
