Newly Hatched Butterfly Beside Its Chrysalis

Coloring guide
Hanging from a leafy branch by a little silk loop is the striped chrysalis, split open along one side, and the smiling butterfly with curly antennae that just crawled out clings right beside it. Big cells and rows of round dots along the edges make up the wings, giving lots of shapes to fill in. Large veined leaves surround them, two small clusters of berries sit at the lower corners, and a sun with straight rays shines in the top right. Thick outlines and roomy sections suit crayons and chunky markers, and they're a gentle first step into detail work for young kids. Orange and black wings with yellow dots on the edges, plus light green on the chrysalis, will help it blend with the leaves. Download it as a free PDF for a quick coloring break. A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.
- leaf green
- deep orange
- sunny yellow
- lime green
- golden yellow
- charcoal black
- orange
- bright red
- reddish brown
- chocolate brown
A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the leaves, stems and tree branch: fill the leaves with leaf green and the branch with reddish brown, leaving the background white.
- 2Color the chrysalis hanging from the branch in lime green, then fill the butterfly's wings with deep orange and orange, switching between the two for a banded look.
- 3Add sunny yellow to the butterfly's body stripes and the bands on the forewings, and golden yellow to the lower wing sections and the sun's center.
- 4Fill the wing borders, the thin edges and the head outline areas with charcoal black, leaving the small round dots white.
- 5Color the berries bright red and the sun center sunny yellow, and keep the butterfly's eye whites and the background white.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading along the edges of the leaves and the chrysalis with a deeper shade of the same color to make them look more rounded.
