A plump, smiling hen sits in a wooden nesting box full of loose straw, and one smooth oval egg peeks out next to her. She has big round eyes with long lashes, a small beak, a wavy comb and a wattle under her chin. Scalloped feathers cover her chest and wing, and her fanned tail feathers stand up behind her. Tall vertical boards rise behind the box, and a few loose bits of straw lie on the ground at the bottom. The plank sides of the box have little round nail dots. Large, open shapes make this free printable friendly for preschoolers, while the feather scallops keep older kids busy. Try warm reddish-brown on the hen, bright red on the comb and golden yellow on the straw, so the creamy white egg stands out. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the wooden crate, the wing feathers and the tail with warm brown, leaving the crate slats and feather lines as dark outlines.
- 2Fill the chicken's head and neck with sunny orange, keeping the eye whites and the small shine spots white.
- 3Color the comb and the wattle bright red so they pop against the orange head.
- 4Fill the chicken's body and the egg with cream, leaving the white highlight areas untouched.
- 5Color the beak and the chin area golden yellow, then fill the straw with golden yellow, soft gold and a few warm brown strands.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading under the wings and along the crate edges to give the drawing more depth.
