Seahorse Meets a Striped Fish Friend

Here a friendly seahorse with a curled tail and a ridged crest faces a small round fish that has a striped head and tail fins. They look right at each other, and both seem to be smiling. The seahorse has a banded belly, a big shiny eye and a fan-shaped fin on its back. The little fish has a large eye, an open smiling mouth and a fin on its side. Round bubbles of different sizes float above and between the pair. Tall wavy seaweed grows on both sides, and a smooth rock with a few small pebbles sits at the bottom. Big shapes and bold lines suit preschoolers and early elementary kids with crayons or chunky markers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big rock at the bottom and the smaller rocks beside it, filling them in slate gray.
- 2Color both tall seaweed plants and the short one in grass green, leaving a thin white streak on the left seaweed.
- 3Fill the seahorse's head, long body and curly tail with lemon yellow, then use golden yellow for the tail coil and the top of the curl.
- 4Paint the seahorse's body stripes, the fish's body and its back frill in warm orange, and use deep orange for the seahorse's crest, side fin, and the fish's fins and tail.
- 5Color the bubbles in sky blue, keeping the eye whites, the seahorse's eye shine and the fish's white stripes white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading along the lower edges of the rock and the seahorse's body to give it some depth.
