Sitting on a thick branch, a cheerful squirrel grips a big acorn in both front paws and grins, showing two little front teeth. The fluffy tail curls up behind and the ears have tufts at the tips. A small wall-style calendar pad hangs from a hook on the trunk beside it, a fun nod to the calendar theme. Leaves drift through the air and a few more cling to the branch below. The trunk has bark lines and a knothole on the right. Wide outlines and large open areas are easy for small hands, while the fur, acorn cap and bark give older kids more detail. Reddish-brown suits the squirrel and tail, golden tan the acorn, and orange, yellow and green the leaves. This free printable is a good autumn activity at home or in class. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the squirrel's big areas: color the body, tail, head, back leg and acorn in rich orange.
- 2Fill the light belly, the front paw and the calendar pages with cream, leaving the belly edges soft.
- 3Color the acorn nut and its cap in rich orange, then the tree knots and the hanging hook in chestnut brown.
- 4Color the calendar binding strips in light gold, the top hanger ring in bright yellow, and the inside of both ears and the nose in baby pink.
- 5Color all the leaves, including the falling ones, in leaf green. Leave the background white.
- 6Optional: add a slightly darker orange along the edges of the tail for a bit of depth.
