Animal friends fill the two passenger cars pulled by this smiling steam locomotive. A spotted giraffe sticks its long neck out of the back window, a baby elephant rests on the window ledge of the middle car, and a little bear peeks out beside the engine. Smoke curls up from the funnel into a large cloud, and a sun with rays shines next to another small cloud. Tufts of grass line the track, a few flowers sit in the bottom corner, and a grassy hill rises behind. Big wheels and wooden railroad ties leave kids lots of room to color. Red would suit the engine, soft gray the elephant, and yellow-orange the giraffe's spots. A free printable for preschoolers and early elementary kids who like both animals and trains. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big smoke cloud and the small cloud in powder blue and pale blue, then color the sun in sunshine yellow.
- 2Fill the engine body, the carriage walls and the cab panels in bright blue, and paint the chimney, bumpers and big wheels in fire red.
- 3Color the giraffe head and roof areas in sunshine yellow with its spots in mustard gold, then add the elephant body in light gray and the bear in caramel brown.
- 4Add light pink to the elephant ears and rose pink to the giraffe's ear and the bear's smile, leaving the eye whites white for a sparkly look.
- 5Finish the background with lime green and leaf green on the hills and bushes, and use tan brown and warm gray for the track sleepers and rails.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading with charcoal gray on the wheel edges and mint green on the giraffe window to give depth.
