Out of a stone-brick tunnel rolls a little steam locomotive with a big friendly smile, round eyes and a round nose. Smoke curls from the chimney into a big cloud shape, and a round sun with rays sits in the upper corner. The engine rides on curving tracks with wooden ties, framed by grassy hills and tufts of grass. Daisy-style flowers with leaves tuck into the corners as a sweet finishing touch. There are areas of all sizes to color, from the striped front grille to the wheels and cab window, so preschoolers and early elementary kids can all join in. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big background: color the grass hills and bushes light green and forest green, and the grass tufts leaf green, leaving the sky and sun area white until later.
- 2Fill the smoke cloud and the rails and ties with pale blue and wood brown, then color the tunnel arch bricks tan and the inside of the tunnel charcoal.
- 3Color the engine body sky blue and the boiler bands deep blue, leaving the eye whites white. Use silver gray for the rail and light gray for the face.
- 4Add the red parts: the front grille, buffer beam, nose and mouth. Color the chimney charcoal with a golden yellow cap, and the headlamp ring golden yellow with a cream center.
- 5Color the sun golden yellow and the flowers rose pink with leaf green stems and leaves.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading under the boiler and inside the tunnel to make the train pop.
