Mountain Tunnel Ahead for This Smiling Train

A steam engine with a wide-eyed, open-mouthed grin heads along the rails toward a stone tunnel. One passenger car with several windows follows, and the track curves up the hillside to the tunnel mouth. Look for the funnel-shaped smokestack, round front lamp, big spoked wheels and ribbed cowcatcher on the engine. The background has plenty going on: snow-capped mountains, puffy clouds, tall layered pine trees on both sides, a few bushes and rocky hills in the corner. Clean shapes and bold lines work for little ones with chunky crayons, and older kids can add their own detail. Red or blue looks good on the engine, with icy light blue on the peaks and deep green on the pines. A free printable for a quiet afternoon or a lesson on transportation. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big sky areas in sky blue, leaving the snowy mountain peaks and the cloud outlines white.
- 2Color the mountains and the tunnel rock in steel gray and the rest of the mountains in sky blue, then fill the pine trees and bushes in forest green and grass green.
- 3Paint the engine body in royal blue and deep blue, and color the smokestack, cab roof and passenger car roof in charcoal gray and bright red.
- 4Fill the cowcatcher and bumpers in bright red and cherry red, then add the golden yellow and lemon yellow stripes on the cab, dome, and passenger cars.
- 5Color the wheels in bright blue and royal blue, and the track ties in copper brown, leaving the engine face light gray with white eye and teeth highlights.
- 6Optional: Add a little extra shading to the tunnel and the sides of the boiler with darker versions of the same colors for depth.
