A cheerful steam locomotive with a big smiling face chugs along curved tracks in this sweet bedtime-style scene. Three little elves in pointed hats wave from the windows, one in the engine cab and two in the round train cars behind. Smoke puffs from the chimney turn into stars, and more stars in different sizes dot the sky. Fluffy clouds fill the corners, and the wooden track sleepers curve toward the bottom of the page. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sky: fill the clouds, the smoke puffs, and the large stars at the top with pale blue, and color the small stars scattered around with golden yellow.
- 2Paint the engine's body in bright blue, including the cab walls, the boiler, and the wheel hubs, leaving the window openings for the elves.
- 3Color the red parts next: the cab roof, the smokestack, and the skirt panels in bright red, with the skirt stripes in cherry red and the lower trim in tangerine orange.
- 4Fill the round front face, its rim, the front wheels, the top of the back carriage, and the headlight ring with golden yellow, keeping the eyes and smile highlights white.
- 5Color the carriages: violet purple for the left carriage and leaf green for the middle one, then add the elves' green and blue hats and their peach skin.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes of steel blue on the back wheels and chocolate brown on the track ties, and finish the rails in light gray.
