In the middle of its enclosure stands a cheerful zebra, head tilted a little and smiling, with a tufted mane and a swishing tail, all drawn in bold stripes. Behind a wooden fence, three children wave from a low stone wall, with a small roofed pavilion and leafy bushes behind them. On the right, a wheelbarrow heaped with hay sits next to a large tree, and a little pond with stepping stones, lily pads and a lotus flower fills the lower corner. Grass tufts, small plants and rocks are scattered across the ground. Those stripes are great practice in steady pencil control for young colorers. Soft greens work for the bushes and leaves, golden yellow for the hay, and the zebra can stay classic black and white or surprise everyone with rainbow stripes. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big green areas: color the tree canopy, bushes and grass in leaf green and lime green, leaving a little darker green for the bush behind the children.
- 2Color the tree trunk and fence rails in wood brown and golden brown, then fill the pond water with sky blue.
- 3Fill the wheelbarrow in tomato red and the hay in golden yellow, then color the zebra's ears and inner ears soft pink.
- 4Color the zebra's muzzle and the hooves dark gray, and fill the pond rocks light gray.
- 5Finish with charcoal black for the zebra's stripes, tail and the dark back stripes, keeping the zebra's body, eyes and white areas white.
- 6Optional: add a little shadow to the pond rocks and bushes with a slightly darker tone for extra depth.
