Thirsty Zebra at the Pond with a Baobab Tree

A young zebra leans down for a drink, its nose just touching a still pond and sending ripples across the water. Right below, the wavy reflection shows the wide eyes and striped face, a neat detail for little artists to shade. Tall cattails stand on both sides of the pond, round lily pads float on top, and a blooming water lily sits in the lower right corner. Farther back, a big baobab tree rises beside a few small bushes, with grass tufts and a couple of pebbles along the bank. Bold outlines and open shapes suit kids ready for a little more detail than a simple page. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the grass and meadow areas on both sides and in the middle with pale green, and fill the distant bushes with bright green and forest green, leaving the sky and the zebra white.
- 2Paint the baobab trunk brown, its leaves bright green, and keep the top of the canopy white.
- 3Fill the pond water and its ripples with sky blue, then color the reflection in the water with light gray and a little slate blue-gray.
- 4Color the zebra's inner ears and the reflected pink patches pink, the nose warm taupe, and the hooves charcoal black, keeping the eye whites and the rest of the zebra white.
- 5Color the lotus flower golden yellow with pink petal tips, the lily pads bright green, and the cattails and pond bank brown.
- 6Optional: add medium gray shading to the zebra's legs and belly for a bit of depth.
