Sleepy Zebra Napping Under the Moon

A little zebra is curled up fast asleep on the grass, head resting on its front hooves, eyes shut and a gentle smile on its face. A wide, flat-topped tree spreads its cloudy branches overhead, with a small bird perched on a limb to the right, and a crescent moon hangs in the upper corner. It all adds up to a calm bedtime scene. Grass tufts dot the ground and soft bushes sit behind the zebra. The stripes, spiky mane and tufted tail give kids plenty of shapes to fill, while the big canopy and moon are easy for younger children. Deep blues and purples would suit the night sky and tree, warm yellow the moon, and the zebra can wear classic black stripes or playful rainbow ones. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big areas: fill the tree trunk and branches in warm brown, and the top of the tree canopy in bright green.
- 2Add the bushes and grass tufts in forest green, then fill the smaller leaf clusters in light green.
- 3Color the zebra's mane, legs, hooves, tail and stripes in charcoal gray, leaving the white fur, the white stripes and the white patches on the body untouched.
- 4Fill the zebra's nose in peach pink, the inner ears in coral pink, the top of the mane in light gray, and the bird's wing in sky blue with its belly in cream yellow.
- 5Optional: add a little medium gray to the small shadow near the zebra's neck and a light touch of shading on the stripes to make them pop.
