Three decorated sugar skulls sit side by side in this Día de Muertos table scene, getting smaller from the big one in the middle to the tiny one on the right. Each has round eyes, a flower pattern on the forehead and a smile full of teeth. In front, a round loaf of pan de muerto with bone-shaped stripes rests on a scalloped plate over a fringed cloth. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the wooden table in dark wood brown and the bread loaf in caramel brown, leaving the cream skulls, marigolds and tiny highlights for later.
- 2Fill the large and small sugar skulls with cream, keeping the eye whites and teeth white, then add hot pink flower petals on the big skull's forehead.
- 3Color the marigolds in marigold orange, the mug in royal purple with coral red flowers, and the candle in golden yellow with a pale yellow top.
- 4Paint the plate and tablecloth stripes in teal, hot pink and royal purple, then add pale gold glaze on the bread top and drips.
- 5Optional: Add a little amber or bright orange shading to the bread and candle flame to make them look warmer and more dimensional.
