Spring Garden Fence with Three Butterflies

Three smiling butterflies with curly antennae float above a garden fence in this springtime picture. Their big rounded wings are filled with circles, dots and swirly sections, so each one can get its own pattern. Underneath, a wooden picket fence stands behind tulips with closed petals and daffodils with open, star-shaped blooms. Tall grass blades fill the bottom, and a couple of leafy bushes peek out from behind the fence on either side. Clear outlines and large shapes suit preschoolers and early elementary kids with crayons or markers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the daffodils and the yellow butterfly heads: fill the daffodil petals and the butterfly heads with lemon yellow, leaving the daffodil centers white.
- 2Color the two big top and side butterfly wings: use rose pink on the top butterfly's outer wings, lavender purple on its inner wings, and sky blue on the left butterfly, keeping the round spots white.
- 3Fill the tulips next: color the top and side petals of the tall tulips with tulip red, and the two front tulips with rose pink or baby pink.
- 4Add the fence: use warm tan on the pickets and wood brown on the horizontal rails, then color the bushes with grass green.
- 5Finish the grass and stems with grass green and forest green, and leave the small white highlights on the grass tips and the white spots on the wings untouched.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes of forest green along the grass blades and wood brown along one side of each fence picket for a bit of depth.
