Three cheerful ladybugs gather around the top of a big round watermelon, each with a wide smile, round eyes, and curly antennae. One sits at the top center while the other two lean in from the left and right, peeking over the curved rind. Large dots cover their shells, which are easy for small hands to fill. Bold wavy stripes run down the melon from top to bottom. Along the bottom you'll see a lobed leaf on the left, a curly vine tendril in the middle, and a simple five-petal flower with a round center on the right. Thick outlines and roomy shapes suit preschoolers and early elementary kids. Red shells with black dots, set against two shades of green on the melon, will make the bugs stand out. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the watermelon's light green middle stripes and sections with light green, leaving the thin black lines as they are.
- 2Fill the dark green outer rind on both sides and along the top and bottom of the watermelon with dark green.
- 3Color the two leaves and the bottom of the watermelon with medium green, so the leaves stand out against the rind.
- 4Color the three ladybug shells red, then fill the flower petals with yellow.
- 5Paint the ladybug heads and faces light peach, leaving the eyes and the curly stem white.
- 6Finish with the black spots on the ladybugs and a small orange center in the flower. Optional: add a slightly darker stroke of dark green on the rind for depth.
