Tiny Mushroom House Under a Fall Oak

At the foot of a big oak tree sits a round little mushroom house. Its spotted cap has a ribbed underside and a small brick chimney, and there are lots of big circles to fill in. Below the cap are two round-shuttered windows with crossed panes and an arched wooden door with its own round window and a tiny knob. A path of oval stepping stones leads up from the bottom edge. Grass tufts, two small mushrooms, acorns and fallen oak leaves surround the house, and more oak leaves hang from a branch at the top right. Large shapes and clear outlines are easy for young kids, while the leaves and bark add detail for older ones. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the mushroom cap's large top area in bright red, leaving the round spots white.
- 2Fill the mushroom's lower body and round base in cream, including the gill band under the cap.
- 3Color the arched door and its planks in warm brown, then add a golden yellow dot for the doorknob.
- 4Use sky blue for the round window panes on both sides of the house.
- 5Add leaf green to the oak leaves and light green to the grass tufts, then color the small mushrooms in bright red with cream stems.
- 6Finish with stone gray on the chimney and the stepping stones, and tan on the acorn nut. Optional: add a little darker shading on the bark and under the cap for depth.
