A big-billed toucan sits on a thick, knotted branch with its feet gripping the wood and its round eye looking off to one side. The wing is drawn in layered feathers, and a long tail hangs down below the branch. Around the bird are large split-leaf monstera leaves, hibiscus-style flowers with stamens on both sides, hanging vines in the top corners and soft cloud-like foliage in the background. Small hands will like the large shapes on the beak, wing and leaves, and older kids can work on the feather lines and flower centers. Bright orange and yellow with a dark tip on the beak, a black and white body, and pink or red flowers against deep green leaves make a striking mix. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big background areas: fill the grass and bushes with grass green, leaving the sky and vines white.
- 2Color the large leaves and foliage in leaf green and dark green, including the monstera leaves at the top left and bottom right.
- 3Fill the toucan's body in charcoal gray, covering the wings, tail, and back, then paint the chest area.
- 4Color the face patch in lemon yellow and the big beak in bright orange, adding golden yellow at the base and coral red at the tip.
- 5Paint the branch in wood brown and the claws in sky blue, then add coral red to the hibiscus flowers.
- 6Optional: Add a little shading with darker strokes on the wings and tail, and leave the eye white and the leaf veins white for a bright finish.
