This friendly horse lowers its head to nibble a tuft of grass. It has a big round eye with a little eyelash, a small smile, pointed ears and a long wavy mane that sweeps over its neck, while the tail hangs in soft curves behind. Small clumps of grass sit around the hooves, and a few rounded bushes line the ground in the background. Wide outlines and open shapes suit preschoolers and early elementary kids who are still building pencil control. A warm chestnut brown horse with a darker mane and tail looks good, and two or three shades of green make the grass tufts stand out. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the horse's body, head, and legs in chestnut brown, using smooth strokes and leaving the eye white and chin highlight unpainted.
- 2Color the mane, forelock, and tail in pale yellow, following the wavy lines of the hair.
- 3Fill the outer ears with coral pink and the inner ears with rose pink, then add the cream muzzle area.
- 4Paint the hooves in charcoal gray and the bushes and grass tufts in grass green, keeping the background gaps white.
- 5Add a little detail to the eye with a dark pupil and leave a small white shine so the face looks lively.
- 6Optional: Add a few diagonal pencil strokes in darker brown on the body and legs for a textured, shaded look.
