At a wooden easel stands a cheerful octopus, one tentacle holding a paintbrush as it paints a little fish swimming among seaweed and bubbles on the canvas. More brushes are tucked into its other tentacles, and a bundle of three brushes rests behind it on the left. It has big sparkly eyes, a wide smile and a row of spots across its head. Simple waves roll behind it under a sky with two puffy clouds. Down on the sandy ground, a smiling starfish, a snail with a swirly shell and a few seashells keep the artist company. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the clouds in pale blue and the sea bands behind the octopus in sky blue, leaving the painting canvas white.
- 2Fill the octopus head, arms and lower body with lavender purple, leaving the eye whites white and adding a violet grip on the brush handles.
- 3Color the easel legs, crossbar and posts in brown and tan, and paint the seaweed on the canvas in pale aqua.
- 4Color the starfish and its arms in bright orange, the fish on the canvas in golden yellow, and the snail body in lime green with its shell in soft pink.
- 5Fill the scallop shells in coral orange, the spiral shells in lavender purple, and the small blue shell in sky blue, then finish the smile in salmon pink.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading in the sea and under the octopus arms to make the scene feel deeper.
