Baby Chick Hatching in a Spring Nest

Coloring guide
Here's a baby chick bursting out of a cracked eggshell with its wings held wide, like it's saying hello. It has big round eyes, a small open beak and a fluffy tuft of feathers on its head, so it looks sweetly surprised. The top half of the shell is tilted on its head like a tiny hat, and a jagged crack runs around the egg under its chest. The egg sits in a messy straw nest. Grass tufts line the bottom, and a simple round-petaled flower stands on each side. Outlines are bold and shapes are fairly big, which suits preschoolers and early elementary kids. This one is a free printable. Soft yellow for the fluffy body, orange for the beak and pale blue or pink for the shell will help the chick pop against a golden nest. Crayons and markers both work well. This fits right in with our Spring coloring pages — see also Jesus / Bible and Flowers.

- warm brown
- lavender purple

A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the chick's body and wings in bright yellow, leaving the eye whites and the small shine dots in each eye uncolored.
- 2Fill the cracked eggshell pieces on top and the bottom of the egg with cream, keeping the shell edges clean.
- 3Color the nest with warm brown, working from the center outward and across the bottom edge.
- 4Add the beak in orange and the open mouth in rose pink.
- 5Color the flower petals in lavender purple, leaving the small white gaps along the stems, and fill the flower centers in bright yellow.
- 6Finish the grass and leaves in grass green. Optional: add a little darker brown at the edges of the nest for depth.
