Standing on a grassy hill with his face tilted up, a smiling boy holds the kite string in both hands while one arm reaches high. He's dressed in a short-sleeved t-shirt, shorts and sneakers. Above him floats a diamond-shaped kite with a long ribbon tail and three bows, and a little bird flies nearby among three puffy clouds. Tulips grow on both sides of the hill, with daisy-style flowers and tufts of grass around his feet. Big open shapes work well for younger children, while the petals and ribbon curls give older kids more to do. Try a bright red or sunny yellow kite against a soft sky blue so the tail stands out. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the clouds and the bird: fill the three clouds with pale blue and the bird with light blue, leaving the bird's eye and small shine spots white.
- 2Color the hill and the grass patches in grass green, then add the leaves of the tulips in the same green while keeping the tulip stems white.
- 3Fill the kite with red on the top panel, orange on the bottom panel and sky blue on the right panel, then color the bows red and the ribbon tails yellow.
- 4Color the boy's face, arms and legs peach skin, his hair brown, his shirt and sleeves sky blue, and his shorts navy blue, keeping his socks white.
- 5Finish the tulip heads in red, color the shoes red and cream, and leave the sole and laces white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shade under the clouds and along the bottom of the hill to make the scene feel more lively.
