Baby Owl on a Branch Looking at Moon and Stars

Coloring guide
Perched on a leafy branch, a big-eyed baby owl tilts its head up as if gazing at the large cratered moon glowing behind it. Stars of different sizes are scattered across the night sky around the moon. The owl has a tufted head, round pupils with sparkly highlights, a tiny beak, and scalloped feathers on its chest and wings. Its feet grip the branch, with leaves sprouting on both the left and right. Clean, bold outlines and roomy shapes suit preschoolers and early elementary kids using crayons or markers. Soft browns and tan for the owl, a pale yellow moon, and deep blue or purple for the sky will let the stars pop. Print the free PDF at home and keep a few extra copies handy. This fits right in with our Star coloring pages — see also Beach and Tree.
A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.
- cream
- lemon yellow
- caramel brown
- leafy green
- chocolate brown
- mustard gold
- tangerine orange
A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the moon and the stars: fill the big moon and the five-pointed stars with lemon yellow, and add mustard gold to the moon's craters.
- 2Color the owl's belly, face and chest with cream, leaving the two big eyes white.
- 3Fill the owl's wings, head feathers and tail with chocolate brown and caramel brown, working in layers so the feathers look soft.
- 4Color the branch with caramel brown and the leaves with leafy green, adding a little chocolate brown along the branch edges.
- 5Use tangerine orange for the beak and the two chunky feet grips on the branch, then add black pupils in the eyes.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes of chocolate brown along the wing edges for extra depth.
