In a grassy clearing, a smiling baby elephant holds its trunk curled high and sprays a fountain of water droplets that fall over its back in a bubbly, foamy mist. Puffy cartoon clouds drift in the upper left. The elephant has big rounded ears, a tufted tail and little toenails on its sturdy feet. On the right, a small bird sits on a tree stump and seems to be enjoying the show. Grass tufts, small rocks and low bushes cover the ground. Large shapes and bold outlines suit preschoolers and early elementary kids, and the water drops and grass give careful colorers some small details. Gray or blue for the elephant, light blue for the spray and a yellow or red bird would be cheerful. The printable PDF is free, with no sign-up. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color all the clouds and the small puffs in the sky with sky blue, leaving the little spray droplets white.
- 2Fill the tree stump with warm brown and the two rocks on the ground with sandy tan.
- 3Color the elephant's body, trunk, and legs with light gray, then use charcoal gray for the tip of the tail.
- 4Add blush pink to the far ear and the inside of the curled trunk, and color the open mouth coral red, leaving the eye whites white.
- 5Color the bird's body golden yellow and its feet sandy tan, then fill the toenails and toes with cream and the shadow on the leg with leafy green.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading under the elephant and along the stump to give the scene more depth.
