Butterfly Landing on a Baby Elephant's Trunk

Coloring guide
Standing on four sturdy legs in a patch of grass, a smiling baby elephant holds its trunk high so a butterfly can land right on the tip. It gazes up at the tiny visitor with big, shiny eyes and an open, happy mouth. Look for the wrinkled trunk, large rounded ears, the small tuft of hair on its head and the tassel on the tail. A round-petaled flower blooms on each side, and blades of grass fill the bottom of the page. The butterfly has a smiling face, curly antennae and wings with dots and loops that suit small brushes or crayons. Soft blue or gray on the elephant and orange or purple wings will make the butterfly pop against the trunk. Print this free page for a classroom project or weekend craft. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big areas: color the elephant's body, trunk, legs, and large ear in light gray, leaving the eye whites and the small trunk wrinkle area white.
- 2Fill the far ear and the inner ear behind the trunk with baby pink, then add a coral red tongue inside the smile.
- 3Color the tail and the small tail tip in charcoal gray, and fill the feet with cream so they stand out from the gray legs.
- 4Paint the butterfly: golden yellow on the upper wings, lemon yellow on the head and body, warm orange on the lower wings, and purple on the wing tips and dots.
- 5Finish the flowers with hot pink petals and lemon yellow centers, color the leaves and grass with leaf green, and keep the background white. Optional: add a few darker strokes on the gray body for a little shading.
