At the center of this underwater scene sits a friendly octopus with big shiny eyes and a happy smile, its curly tentacles spread out to show rows of little suckers. Spots and bubble-like circles cover the round head. Above, a school of striped tropical fish swims under rays of sunlight coming through the wavy water surface, and small bubbles float up. Branching corals, tube sponges and bumpy reef shapes fill in around it, and two clownfish-style fish peek out from sea anemones in the bottom corners. Older kids will have plenty to color in the detailed background, while the large octopus is an easy place for younger children to begin. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the water: fill the upper background and light rays with sky blue, and the water surface near the top with ocean blue, leaving the foam at the very top white.
- 2Color the big octopus body and all its arms with coral pink, keeping the eye whites and the small shine dots white.
- 3Fill the spotted areas on the octopus head with blush pink and rose pink to add a playful pattern.
- 4Color the fish with sky blue, golden yellow and cream, leaving the white stripes and eyes white.
- 5Add the corals and seaweed with orange, sea green, olive green and lavender purple, then finish the seabed with butter yellow and sunny gold.
- 6Optional: add a little darker teal or dark teal shading along the edges of the tentacles to make the octopus pop.
