Sitting on a snow-topped branch, a round, fluffy owl with big sparkly eyes and a tiny pointed beak stares straight out at you. Its chest is covered in neat scalloped feathers, and both wings are tucked against its sides with layered feather tips. Little clawed feet grip the branch, which curves across the bottom. Behind the owl, a crescent moon glows in the upper right while snowflakes of different sizes and small round dots drift across the night sky. Large shapes and clear outlines are easy for little hands, and the feather details give older kids something to focus on. Try soft grays, creamy browns and warm tan on the owl, icy light blue snowflakes and a pale yellow moon. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the big round body of the owl with cream white, leaving the eye whites, eye shines and the snow-free spots of the page white.
- 2Color the beak and both feet, including the toes and talons, with golden yellow.
- 3Paint the snow sitting on the branches and the small knot on the twig with pale ice blue, leaving the background white.
- 4Fill both wings and the wing feathers with chestnut brown, plus the lower branch parts with the same brown.
- 5Add caramel orange to the wing edges and to the main branch and its center section so they stand out.
- 6Optional: add a little extra chestnut brown under the wings and along the belly feathers for a soft shadow.
