A big-eyed owl perches on a leafy branch with its small toes curled over the wood. Its chest and belly are covered in rows of overlapping scallop feathers, with little hearts tucked between them. One larger heart sits on the forehead between the ear tufts, a swirl design curls across each wing, and long lashes frame the round eyes. In the night sky behind it you'll find a crescent moon and three small stars, while more leafy branches reach in from the top left and the bottom corners. All those repeating scales and tiny hearts suit kids who love fine detail and have patience with colored pencils or fine-tip markers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the owl's face with cream and the beak with golden yellow, leaving the two big eye whites bright white.
- 2Color the ear tufts, the branch, and the outer edges of the body and wings warm brown.
- 3Color the wing swirls, the forehead heart, and the hearts on the wings and chest in baby pink, then add lilac purple to the outer wing feathers.
- 4Work through the body scales, alternating cornflower blue, pale blue, soft lavender, and orchid pink so the feathers look varied.
- 5Color the leaves in leaf green, the feet and the star in golden yellow, and the small leaf tip at the wing edges in terracotta.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading along the lower edges of the scales with the same color to make the feathers pop.
