Baby Squirrel with a Pine Cone on a Winter Branch
Coloring guide
Sitting upright on a snow-covered branch, a smiling baby squirrel holds a big pine cone in both paws, as if it's about to take a bite. It has large sparkly eyes, tufted ears, a tiny nose and a fluffy curled tail that sweeps up behind. Pine branches with needle-like leaves hang in the top corner and stretch across the bottom right, and three snowflakes float in the empty space nearby. Big, simple shapes and clear outlines work well for preschoolers and early elementary kids, and the fur and pine needles give older children some detail to enjoy. Warm orange-brown for the squirrel and tail, golden tan for the pine cone and icy blue for the snow on the branch would be a nice mix. A calm free printable for a cold day. A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.
- bright orange
- pale sky blue
- chestnut brown
- cream
- soft pink
- light brown
- pine green
A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big squirrel shapes: fill the body, tail, both ears, cheeks, and feet with bright orange, leaving the cream belly for later.
- 2Color the cream belly and the front of the chest with cream, then add soft pink to the inside of both ears.
- 3Fill the pine cone with light brown on the upper scales and chestnut brown on the lower scales, and color the little stem at the top light brown too.
- 4Use chestnut brown for the tree branch at the bottom and the thin twig, then add pine green to all the pine needles in the corners and along the right branch.
- 5Add pale sky blue to the snow piled on the branches, and keep the small shine in the squirrel's eyes white.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker orange along the tail edges and under the body to give the squirrel some depth.
