There's a lot happening on this farmyard page. One duck floats on a rippling pond, another stands on the grassy bank preening its wing feathers, and a third bends over a round bowl of grain to eat. Behind them sits a cozy cottage with a chimney, shuttered windows and a flower box, along with a wooden fence, a round hay bale and a wheelbarrow. Cattails, water lilies, daisy-like flowers, grass tufts and a leafy tree fill the edges. Large shapes and clear lines work for preschoolers, and older kids who like detail will have plenty to do. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the pond water in sky blue and the food bowl and sky area in light blue, leaving the lily pads for later.
- 2Fill the bushes, trees and grass patches with leaf green and bright lime green, and color the lily pads in leaf green too.
- 3Paint the cottage walls brick red, the roof slate gray, and the hay bale and its shadowed sides honey yellow, adding golden yellow to the hay bale's brighter spots.
- 4Color the front duck's beak and feet orange, the cattail heads tan, and the swimming duck's wing silver gray, keeping the ducks' bodies, feathers and eye whites white.
- 5Add the pale yellow green meadow hill, the silver gray rocks by the pond, and the brown cattail stalks to finish the background.
- 6Optional: add a little olive green or dark brown shading under the reeds and along the bottom grass for depth.
