Gone Fishing Duck on a Wooden Dock

Wearing a floppy straw hat, a smiling duckling sits at the edge of a wooden pier with a fishing rod in both wings and its webbed feet dangling over the water. A little fish leaps up at the end of the line with water splashing around it, and the duckling looks delighted. A bucket sits next to the duck, and a thick wooden post stands in the foreground. Calm ripples spread across the lake behind them, along with reeds, bushy trees and puffy clouds on the shoreline. Young children can handle the big, simple shapes, and the straw texture and wood grain give older kids some detail. Golden yellow for the duckling and hat, and bright orange for the fish, will pop against blue water. A free printable that makes a nice quiet-time activity. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the duck's body, head, and hand holding the rod with bright yellow, leaving the eye whites bright white.
- 2Fill the duck's hat with straw yellow, then add the red band in bright red and the golden tan edge on the left brim.
- 3Color the duck's beak and both feet orange, and give the open mouth a salmon pink tongue.
- 4Color the bucket bright red and the dock, posts, and bucket handle in warm brown, with the dark brown wood at the far left end.
- 5Fill the bushes, grass, and fish in leaf green and sage green, then paint the water and lake in bright blue and the clouds in pale sky blue, leaving the background sky white.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading on the dock planks and under the duck to make the wood and body look more three-dimensional.
