Here's a happy baby zebra shown in three-quarter view, head turned your way. It has big round eyes, a friendly smile and a rounded snout with two little nostrils. The ears stand upright, and a short striped mane runs down the back of the neck. Curved stripes wrap around the body, and the legs have neat horizontal bands that are easy to follow. The tufted tail swings out behind. A few small clumps of grass sit near the front hooves and by the back leg, so there's no busy background to deal with. Bold, simple outlines make it a good match for preschoolers and early elementary kids with crayons or chunky markers, and it would fit nicely into a zoo or safari unit. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the nose and muzzle: fill them with warm taupe, leaving the small nostrils and the smile line uncolored.
- 2Fill the inside of both ears and the tips of the ears with soft pink, keeping the bright highlights white.
- 3Color the zebra stripes on the head, neck, body, and legs with charcoal gray, leaving the white stripes between them empty.
- 4Fill the mane across the top of the head and the tail tuft with medium gray for a softer tone.
- 5Color the hooves with charcoal gray, except one front hoof which stays light gray, and keep the eye whites bright white.
- 6Optional: add a few light shading strokes of medium gray along the belly and inside the legs to give the zebra some volume.
