With his arms stretched wide to stay steady, a smiling boy with tousled hair balances on a surfboard while a big curling wave rises behind him. He's barefoot in loose swim shorts with a drawstring bow, one foot forward and knees bent. Curved lines inside the wave form a swirling tunnel, and splashes and foamy water surround the board. In the sky, a round sun with straight rays sits next to three puffy clouds. There's a good mix of large areas and small details here, so kids can choose what suits them. Turquoise and deep blue for the wave, with a few foam bubbles left white, would look great. A yellow sun and a brightly colored board will pop against the water. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big sun and the two clouds: color the sun golden yellow and the clouds baby blue, leaving the sun's rays and cloud outlines as they are.
- 2Fill the boy's skin, including his face, ear, forehead, chest, arms and legs, with warm skin tone, and keep the drawstring on his shorts white.
- 3Color the shorts emerald green with light mint trim along the leg openings and waistband, and add a pale aqua touch to the hem on the right leg.
- 4Paint the big wave in ocean blue, then add bright aqua to the small splashes and water drops, and baby blue to the foam at the bottom.
- 5Color the surfboard golden yellow, add a tangerine orange stripe along the tail and a thin stripe down the middle, and fill the hair with chestnut brown.
- 6Finish with the open mouth in coral red and any small details, such as the tie area on the shorts, for a bright, cheerful finish. Optional: add a little darker shading on the wave and board edges for depth.
