Hawaiian Surfer Boy Riding a Big Curling Wave

Arms stretched wide for balance and a huge grin on his face, a happy boy with tousled hair rides his surfboard down the front of a large curling wave. He's barefoot in striped swim shorts with a drawstring, one foot near the front of the board and the other toward the back. Foamy splashes and droplets spray around the board, and the frothy crest of the wave arches overhead. Back in the scene, a round sun with straight rays sits in the corner, a seagull glides across the sky, and gentle ocean ripples stretch out to the horizon. All those wavy lines give kids lots of room to practice smooth strokes. Layers of turquoise and deep blue for the wave, a sunny yellow sun, and a bright orange board will make the boy pop. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sun and the boy's skin: color the boy's chest, arms, legs and feet with peach skin, leaving the seagull and foam white.
- 2Color the surfboard in golden yellow, then add the two orange stripes running along its length.
- 3Fill the big curling wave and the water behind the boy with sky blue, using pale blue for the lighter wave lip and water drops.
- 4Color the boy's hair chestnut brown and the sun golden yellow, keeping the sun's rays outlined.
- 5Color the swim trunks with sky blue and royal blue, then add pale blue for the lighter stripes on the shorts.
- 6Finish with the water splashes in aqua blue and leave the seagull, foam bubbles and sea background white. Optional: add a little extra shading on the wave with a slightly darker blue.
