This friendly young horse leans over the half door of its stall with both hooves on the top board, smiling right at you. Big sparkly eyes, long eyelashes, a wavy mane and perked-up ears make it look cheerful. Around the stall are a hanging lantern with a crisscross frame on the post, a metal door hinge and plank walls with a diagonal brace across the lower door. A tied hay bale and a wooden bucket with a handle sit in the bottom corners, with a few loose bits of straw on the floor. Through the window behind the horse you can see a fence and a bushy tree. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big background: fill the barn walls and the outer areas with barn red, leaving the wooden posts and frame in pale cream.
- 2Color the stall door panels, rails, and bucket with caramel tan, and the hay bale with golden yellow.
- 3Fill the horse's face, chest, and legs with caramel tan, then add the mane and forelock in butter yellow.
- 4Use chestnut brown for the back wall boards, roof planks, and the door brace, and sky blue for the window area on the left.
- 5Add coral pink inside the ears, slate gray for the hooves and bucket bands, and bright lime green for the bush.
- 6Optional: Leave the lantern glass white for a shine, and add a little darker shading under the horse's chin and along the hay for depth.
