This little hummingbird hangs in midair with its wings spread wide, pushing its long, thin beak deep into a big trumpet-shaped flower. The round eye is bright, and you'll spot scalloped feather marks on the chest, layered lines on each wing and a fanned tail with long feathers. Its tiny feet are tucked up under its body. Two more open blooms sit lower on the page, each with a few slender stamens in the middle. Pointed leaves and curving stems run along the edges. Young children will find the thick outlines and roomy petals easy, and older kids can take their time on the feather details. Shimmery emerald green on the back and wings, a ruby patch at the throat and pink or purple petals would look lovely. It's free to print for a classroom project or weekend craft. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the flowers: color the large trumpet flowers in rose pink, leaving the pale throat spots white.
- 2Fill the hummingbird's body and the stems and bud in bright green, and color the inner wing feathers in light blue.
- 3Color the large leaves and the stems and sepals in dark green, keeping the thin stem highlights white.
- 4Use royal blue for the outer wing feathers and the tail feathers, then color the beak in charcoal gray.
- 5Optional: Add a little darker shading on the lower edges of the petals and leaves to make them look rounded.
- 6Finish by checking that the eye, background and small highlights are still white for a crisp look.
