Up on its hind legs, a smiling ibex with big curved, ridged horns scrambles up a steep, craggy rock face. Shaggy fur, a little beard and cheerful eyes give it a friendly look. Small star-shaped wildflowers grow between the rocks, with larger blooms in the lower right corner. Behind the ibex, a forested hillside of pines slopes toward a calm lake, and jagged snowy peaks rise in the distance beneath puffy outlined clouds. Big open areas mixed with finer details make this one good for kids who enjoy a challenge. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the ibex body and front and back legs in caramel tan, leaving the eye whites, teeth and cloud shapes white.
- 2Fill the horns with chestnut brown on the ridges, keeping the lighter bands white for a striped look.
- 3Color the sky and lake with sky blue and deep blue, and the distant mountains with steel blue and ice blue, leaving the snowy peaks white.
- 4Add the grassy hillsides in meadow green and light green, and the pine trees in forest green and dark green.
- 5Fill the rocky slope and ledges with light gray, then add the hooves in charcoal gray and the inner ear in soft peach.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading on the rocks and the underside of the ibex to make the scene feel more rounded.
