Kingfisher Watching Fish from a Reed, Birds Coloring Page

Coloring guide
Perched on a curved reed stem, a kingfisher leans forward with its long pointed beak aimed down at a small fish swimming below, a few bubbles beside it. Layered scales mark the feathers on the head, chest and wings, which gives patient little colorists lots of detail. The pond is dotted with lily pads and two water lilies in bloom. Tall cattails and grassy leaves frame both sides, and two dragonflies hover near the top among puffy clouds. Use it for a nature lesson on pond life or a quiet afternoon at the table. Bright turquoise and orange feathers on the kingfisher and soft green lily pads look great together. Print or download this free page for a classroom project or weekend craft. Looking for more? A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.
- light blue
- lime green
- leaf green
- chestnut brown
- rose pink
- orange
- aqua
- olive green
- tan
- sky blue
- forest green
- ocean blue
A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big blue wing area: color the wing feathers in sky blue and ocean blue, and the darker wing edges in royal blue.
- 2Color the orange chest and throat in orange, and the cheek patch by the eye in orange as well. Leave the head feathers and the cheek patch near the beak white.
- 3Fill the water with light blue and aqua, leaving white gaps for ripples. Color the long beak in slate gray.
- 4Paint the lily flowers in rose pink and the lily pads in leaf green and lime green. Keep a few pads lighter for variety.
- 5Color the reeds and cattails: chestnut brown for the cattail tops, tan for the perch stick, and olive green or forest green for the grass and stems.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shade in the wing feathers and the water edges to make the kingfisher and pond look more lively. Color the fish cream with a few white highlights.
