At the top of a tall lavender stalk clings a cheerful butterfly with big round eyes and a smile, wings spread wide. Rounded cells, curved panels and scalloped edges fill the large wings, and each lower wing ends in a long, curling tail. Several lavender stems rise around it at different heights, covered in tiny buds, and long slender leaves fan out along the bottom. Big wing sections sit next to small flower buds, so there are easy open spaces for beginners and finer details for steadier hands. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the grass blades and stems at the bottom: fill them in with leaf green, leaving the thin white highlight lines along the blades.
- 2Color the lavender stalks: fill the buds with soft lilac, and add violet purple to the darker buds in the middle and right-hand stalks.
- 3Fill the big upper wing panels with coral orange and tangerine orange, alternating stripes so the wings look layered.
- 4Color the body and the inner wing panels near the body with lemon yellow, then add amber gold to the lower wing bands and tails.
- 5Leave the scalloped white cells along the wing edges, the eye, and the background white so the pattern pops.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading at the base of each wing and under the flower buds to give them depth.
