Mid-Leap Squirrel Among Oak Branches and Acorns

This squirrel is caught in the middle of a jump, grinning big, with its body and back legs stretched through the air and its large fluffy tail streaming behind. Oak branches around it hold clusters of acorns with textured caps, and lobed oak leaves fill the corners. A few rounded bushes line the bottom edge. Tufted ears, whiskers and wide eyes make the squirrel look playful, and the thick lines are easy for little hands to follow. The jagged fur on the tail is good practice for careful coloring. Try warm reddish-brown on the squirrel with lighter tan on the tummy and tail tips, then golden-brown acorns and autumn greens, oranges and yellows on the leaves. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the squirrel's fluffy tail, body, legs, and ears in bright orange, leaving the small white highlights on the paws and tail edges untouched.
- 2Color the squirrel's lighter belly patch and chin in cream, then add burnt orange shading along the underside of the body.
- 3Fill the inner ears with pale pink and the branches with chestnut brown, keeping the small white highlight spots on the branch ends.
- 4Color the oak leaves in forest green at the top, olive green on the left and right sides, and light lime on the middle leaves, leaving the leaf highlight streaks white.
- 5Add the acorns in caramel, then color the bushes at the bottom in forest green and leave the background white.
- 6Optional: Finish with a few darker strokes of chestnut brown on the branches and burnt orange on the squirrel's tail for extra depth.
