Up in the air above a thick heap of fallen maple leaves, a smiling squirrel bounds along with its front paws out ahead and its big fluffy tail curled behind. More leaves drift down from a trunk and branches in the upper right corner. Two little spotted mushrooms sit on either side of the pile with small tufts of grass nearby. The squirrel has large round eyes, pointed tufted ears and a wide grin, so it suits kids who love animals and autumn scenes. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big squirrel: fill the tail, head, body, and legs with orange, leaving the eye highlights, teeth, and the thin white fur gap near the back white.
- 2Color the inner ears and chest with pale pink and cream, and the mushroom caps with bright red, adding white dots and cream stems.
- 3Fill the leaf pile on the ground with a mix of chestnut brown, rust, amber, and lemon yellow, varying the shades so each leaf stands out.
- 4Color the falling and branch leaves with leaf green, golden yellow, amber, and lemon yellow, keeping a few leaves in the top corner for variety.
