Here's a young peacock with big round eyes and a small crown of five round-tipped feathers, perched on a thick, curving branch. The scalloped wing is folded against its body and its tiny feet hold on tight. The long tail hangs down in a cascade of teardrop-shaped feathers, each with an oval eye inside, so there are lots of little spaces for small hands to fill in. Two big leaves with center veins sit on the left and two more on the right. Bold, clean lines make it a good match for preschoolers and early elementary kids. Deep teal and royal blue would suit the body and tail, with a bright yellow beak, fresh green leaves, and purple or gold inside the tail eyes. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the tree branch and the leaves: color the branch brown and the leaves leaf green, leaving the white background untouched.
- 2Color the peacock's tail feathers dark green, then fill the outer tail sections with leaf green for a lively two-tone look.
- 3Fill the bird's body and neck with royal blue, and color the wings with sky blue on top and light blue for the lower feathers.
- 4Color the crest balls light blue, leaving the thin crest stems white, and fill the beak and feet with golden yellow and amber.
- 5Add the tail eye spots: color the outer rings golden yellow or khaki tan, then fill the centers navy blue and the small ring details gray blue or light blue.
