Beside a woven twig nest on a tree branch, a mother bird holds out a wiggly worm to three hungry chicks. The babies are huddled together with beaks wide open and big round eyes turned upward. Crisscrossing twigs make up the nest, with a few leaves along its edge. Leafy branches frame both sides, the trunk forks below the nest, and a small cloud peeks out behind the chicks on the right. Mom has a rounded body, patterned wing feathers and a long tail, which gives lots of shapes to color. Soft yellows and oranges fit the fluffy chicks, bright blue or red the wings, and warm browns the nest. This free printable is a nice fit for preschoolers and early elementary kids who like nature. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the bird and chicks: color the mother bird's body, wings and tail in bright blue, and color the three baby chicks' bodies in lemon yellow, leaving the eyes and small white highlights unpainted.
- 2Color the beak of the mother bird in orange and the small worm area near it, and use dark brown for the shadowy gap between the chicks.
- 3Fill the nest with light brown for the main woven strands, then use medium brown for the darker strands and the inner shadows around the nest.
- 4Add the leaves in leaf green on the top left, top right, left, right and bottom corners, plus the small leaves tucked into the nest.
- 5Color the tree branches light brown and the green patch under the nest in leaf green, keeping the thin white streaks on the branches and the nest as bright highlights.
- 6Optional: Add a bit of extra darkness to the bird's wing edges and the nest shadows with a slightly deeper shade of the same colors for depth.
