Mama Elephant and Her Calf on the Savanna
Coloring guide
A big mother elephant walks across a grassy field, and her tiny calf trails right behind, holding the tip of her tail with its trunk. Both have big round eyes, floppy ears and gentle smiles, and the mom's long trunk curls down in front of her. On the right stands a flat-topped acacia tree, with low bushes and soft rolling hills farther back. Small grass tufts are scattered over the ground. Wrinkles on the trunks and legs give budding artists extra details, and the large open ears and bodies are easy for younger kids. You could use blue-gray for the elephants, golden yellow for the acacia top and fresh greens for the grass. This free printable fits story time, animal lessons or a quiet activity at home. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big gray areas: color the mama elephant's body, head, and legs, and the calf's body and legs using light gray, leaving the eye whites and toenails for later.
- 2Color the mama elephant's ears and the calf's ears and head area with coral pink, then fill the tiny calf's tail and trunk tip.
- 3Paint the savanna hills and the bushes: use golden yellow for the distant hills and forest green for the bushes beside them, then add warm brown to the tree trunk.
- 4Fill the acacia tree canopy with lime green and add pale green touches to the top of the canopy, keeping the branches and the sky white.
- 5Finish with the details: color the toenails cream, add a charcoal gray tip to the trunk, and leave the eye whites white so the eyes sparkle.
- 6Optional: add a few light strokes of charcoal gray along the elephants' legs and trunk to make them look more rounded.
